#583 delete key fails

when text is highlighted and one presses delete, the
text goes away. the text does nothing if delete is
pressed in regular fashion. thus the delete key is
almost useless.

(i tried to find this already, but i couldn't)
and with subjects out there, it isn't easy anyway.
