How to run JunOS

When we started to think about Debian Network Simulator, we decided that the first feature to support was to have a ready-to-use Juniper emulation. We know, indeed, that is very hard to setup a working GNS3 with JunOS. Is not always easy for all people to compile a patched qemu and have the opportunity to play with topologies where JunOS routers are running.

That's why D.N.S. is published with an already "olive patched" qemu version 0.11. Moreover, GNS3 is alreay configured to use JunOS routers and the only thing you need to setup is the location on hard drive of the JunOS .img file.

If you don't know how to have a JunOS .img file, please check this guide published on GNS3 official technical blog. Unfortunately for copyright reasons we cannot distribute with D.N.S. a previously compiled JunOS image.

Once you have the .img file, just follow these steps:

  1. Open GNS3.
  2. Click on Menu Edit --> Preferences...
  3. Click on Qemu menu on the left.
  4. Click the JunOS tab.
  5. Add a name for the image in the filed "Identifier name".
  6. Select the Binary image clicking on the button [...].
  7. Click button Save.

Once you're done with above steps, clicking on the router image of the main GNS window, you will see that the Juniper Router is active. So you can just drag&drop a Juniper router in your topology.
