I am trying to run the dbms2sde utility in the Windows
2k environment. Are there any special considerations?

Here is the error message I get:

DBMS2SDE alpha 0.341 Nov 5 2002 - an ArcSDE 8.1
application

Running: dbms2sde -o point -l output,objectid -stable
doa_apiaries -s ESPR1SQL3
-u sde -p ******** -load -buffer

If an error occurs, re-run without -buffer for accurate row
diagnostics.
SDE error code: -1
DBMS or OS errno code: 0
DBMS or SE_error_get_string msg:
Second DMBS error, if applicable:

SE_connection_create encountered a -1 error:
Operation Failed

    Hi Alex,

I'm sorry for asking the obvious, but you're able to make an SDE connection okay from your PC? Can you run
sdelayer -o delete -l output, objectid ... with no connection error? (I know there's no layer to delete, but sdelayer
doesn't know that until after it successfully creates a connection.

    Let me know what happens.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Mark,
Sorry it took me a little while to get back here. We just got
SDE 8.3 up and running. I am able to run some SDE
commands from my workstation. I entered the command
exactly as you have it listed. This is the response I got:

Error: Entry for SDE instance not found in services file (-102).
    Error: Cannot get configuration information

    Mark, me again...

I just tried the same sdelayer command and provided a bogus
table name (alex), the instance name, server name, database
    name, userid and user password.

The error message I got was:
    Error, Invalid table,column Specification: "alex"

Sorry it's been a while. But such is the life of this
contractor... But I'm back now with the same problem.

I tried what you suggested above. I get the following error:
    *** ERROR MESSAGE ***

Error: Entry for SDE instance not found in services file (-102).
    Error: Cannot get configuration information

    *** END ERROR MESSAGE ***

I can only run a command from my workstation if in the
command I provide all the connection info (ie. server name,
instance name, id, password and such)

I am running ArcSDE 8.3 on SQL Server 2000 in the Win2k
    environment.

Try running it again without the -buffer and option (let's simplify the problem).

Okay, sorry. I need some fundamental help here. I copied
the dbms2sde.exe file to the ArcSDE bin folder (starting all
    over).

I get an error message saying it can't run because the
sde81.dll file was not found. I can't find the documentation
that tells me how this thing is installed in the first place. Can
    we start from there?

    thanks,

    doofus

Okay, how's this...? I copied the sde83.dll and created an
sde81.dll - now they both exist on my workstation (not the
server itself). When I ran the utility as follows:

    dbms2sde -o point -l alex.objectid -stable doa_apiaries -s
    espr1sql3 -u sde -D sde -p ********* -load

    *** I got the following...

    DBMS2SDE alpha 0.341 Nov 5 2002 - an ArcSDE 8.1
    application

    Running: dbms2sde -o point -l alex.objectid,SHAPE -stable
    doa_apiaries -D sde -s espr1sql3 -u sde -p ******** -load

For fastest performance, use -stable, -load, and -buffer.
    SDE error code: -101
DBMS or OS errno code: 0
    DBMS or SE_error_get_string msg:
    Second DMBS error, if applicable:

    SE_connection_create encountered a -101 error:
    SDE not running on server
    **** End of results

    any ideas?
