Sounds good! I guess it would replace the AC_CHECK_LIB([pthread]... lines.

Seems like a more recent autoconf/aclocal version is required. I can't find the AX_PTHREAD macro with my current configuration:

$ autoconf --version
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.69
$ aclocal --version
aclocal (GNU automake) 1.13.4

I see the following possibilities.
The current software "GNU Autoconf Archive 2014-02-28" can be installed somewhere.
How do you think about to distribute the component "AX_PTHREAD" with your macro directory?

I think distribution in the package macro directory would be the way to go for now.
