You are invited to participate in an academic research project that I am
conducting into open source component licensing. The research is part of
my Doctorate of Business Administration degree at the University of
Newcastle, Australia, and is being supervised by Dr Len Whitehouse. The
research is entirely non-commercial, and full results will be made
freely available to any person who is interested. It is hoped that the
research will offer useful information about how component licensing is
approached in practice.

We are looking for Java software developers who are working on either
commercial or open source projects. Participation in the research is
entirely voluntary, and privacy has been carefully addressed to ensure
that participants cannot be identified. The research has received an
ethics clearance from the university.

Participation will usually take less than 30 minutes. If you
participate, you may optionally view a licensing compliance assessment
report for your project. This may be of general interest or assist in
planning licensing compliance strategies.

Research Information Sheet that fully explains the research and provides

[DBEStudio-Users] New DBE Studio Examples Release, version 1.0.0

A new version (1.0.0) of the DBE Studio Examples feature has been
released. It is available for download from the update site or as a
local archive install. This version includes a composed service example,
but the deployment and execution of this depends on an ExE workflow
engine installation which should be provided with the next Servent
version (0.3.14). Please follow the enclosed cheatsheets for more
information about the provided example services.

Hi folks,

Some people were asking about the computing day in the DBE review. I
understand the agenda is not confirmed yet, but the plan is for computing
WPs to be reviewed Thursday 19th April, taking most of the day. I believe
there are specific slots on the agenda for the different aspects including
ExE / modelling, Studio, & Demo. 

 

As far as the proposed integrated demo is concerned, we should still be able
to use that in the demo slot. The partner updates, however, will have to be
done earlier during the appropriate session in the morning. I guess the
confirmed agenda will be sent out shortly.we can plan further when we see
it.

[DBEStudio-Users] Incompatibility issues with ExE 0.3.12

Dear Users,

There seems to be an incompatibility issues with ExE 0.3.12 when using
the DBE Studio 1.0.0. This is due a mistake in the swallow build system
which caused an incorrect jar to be distributed with the 0.3.12 version.
Therefore you will be unable to use this version with the DBE Studio. I
would suggest that you use 0.3.11 or 0.3.10 until the swallow team
release a new updated version.

[DBEStudio-Users] Code Camp on : Feedback from SMEs.

Dear partners,

We had yesterday a code camp with Implementer I SMEs mainly focused on =
the DBEStudio. I would like to thank Victor Bayor for coming here and =
help us do it.
SMEs have prepaped a feedback which is very interesting and you may find =
it in our web log in http://dbe.ita.es/wordpress/?p=3D69. It also =
includes a list of bugs which we will also report in sourceforge.

Summarizing, SMEs really like the platform concepts, they have ideas to =
apply them, even with business focus and they would like to apply them. =
However, the platform at this moment (based on ExEv0.2.12) does not =
provide trust to SMEs yet and we are near to the end of the project.The =
ExE does not work in that release and SMEs must be very careful when =
using the DBEStudio because everything is very "sensible" (details are =
provided in the feedback). DBE is a great middleware to compose services =
but at the moment "BPEL" for service composition is not available and =
they miss it.

We have one more oportunity in the code camp on November 23rd and we =
shouldn't fail there. It may be our last oportunity to keep the trust.

Hi John,

I think the agenda is very complete.

Since Miguel and someone else of his team are also coming, I think it =
would be interesting if they also explain the last ExE features.

I think that the DBEStudio should have most of the time since that part =
will be the main part which will be accessed by the final SMEs.

Miguel, how long would you need to explain the last ExE features which =
may be of interest to SMEs from a partical point of view?

I would start the workshop at 8:30, and then, I would include the ExE =
part at the end.
What do you think?

One more question, would there be a problem if we swith the Code Camp =
and the JBOSS event dates? for those coming to both events I assume =
there is no problem. Are there people coming to=20
The issue is that there are people who would like to attend the JBOSS =
event but they are also attending the IST2006 in Helsinki.

[DBEStudio-Users] Updated release plan

After a DBE developers virtual meeting last Friday, the release plan for
the DBE Studio and ExE has been updated. Due to integration issues
within the ExE (swallow) project, they have been delayed in the release
of their next version. As the DBE Studio is highly dependent on the ExE,
it is then necessary to further delay the release of the next version of
the DBE Studio. We will be ready to release this version one week after
the next ExE public release. This ExE release is estimated for the 1st
week in August and then following another week for necessary integration
testing, the Studio will be released. You can find more release
information of the dbe wiki site [1] and if you wish to follow the
progress of ExE releases, I would suggest that you subscribe to the
swallow project's discussion list [2].

problem. It has been assigned to the responsible developer and this
developer will get in contact with you if they need any more
information. It is possible that this bug has already been fixed in the
next version of the DBE Studio, which should be released shortly.

[DBEStudio-Users] Changes description in TUC plug-ins for the new release (0.2.1) of the DBE Studio

Dear all,

I briefly describe the changes/new features in our plug-ins for the next 
release (0.2.1) of the DBE Studio.

1. kb-toolkit plug-in (version 0.2.1)
The plugin was upgraded to support the ODM to OWL-DL Exporter module
as well as the communication with new version of the KB service

2. Ontology Viewer plug-in (version 0.2.1)
Bugs fixed: Bug related with the refresh feature was fixed as well as 
the bug reported by Nieves related with importing OWL-DL ontologies
Features added:
    -support for importing OWL-DL ontologies in KB was improved
    -synchronize the Ontology Viewer when selecting the ontology tag in 
the BML Editor

3. BML Editor plug-in (version 0.2.1)
Bugs fixed: The bug item #1422365 and #1515787 reported by Andy Edmonds 
(Intel) were fixed
Features added:
    - Support for versioning from the BML Editor point of view. This 
functionality will be exploitable when the versioning mechanisms of the 
KB core service will be fully operational
    - show clearly the ontology tag when it is annotated in the BML Editor
    - synchronize the Ontology Viewer when selecting the ontology tag in 
the BML Editor

4. Ontology Analysis Tool plug-in (version 0.2.1)
Features added:
    - support for individuals
    - support for exporting of DBE ODM ontologies to OWL-DL ontologies
    - export ODM Ontologies as an xmi file in the local file system.

5. QFSDT plug-in (version 0.2.1)
Features added:
    - query templates can be also created using  ontology concepts
    - a cheat sheet added to guide users using the tool
    - templates can be edited
    - http proxy functionality added
    - query formulation GUI was changed to unify the query editing process

6. help plug-in
The help docBook documents for ODM and BML Editor updated.

The aforementioned functionality finalizes the foreseen technical work 
of tasks C47 "BML Editor", C55 "Ontology Creator/Importer/Viewer", C54 
"Query Formulation and Semantic Discovery" process".

Your use case for service reuse is interesting. Most of this is possible
with the current implementation of the DBE Studio. The DBE Portal is a
web based tool and is targeted at the consumers of DBE services. DBE
providers and service developers should find the DBE Studio more useful.
You can search for services within the Studio by using the Semantic
Discovery tool, as John has already mentioned. Here you can use keyword
or more advanced query searches. The semantic discovery tool enables you
to open BML models and execute services (if a UI exists). Published DBE
services can also be listed within the SM Creator tool, which enables to
load a particular Service Manifest (SM). Here you can view and edit the
details of a particular SM. It is not currently possible to load the
code of a service, as some services may have a proprietary
implementation. Perhaps a service provider may wish to make their
software open source, but this is not currently supported. If you think
that this is a useful feature then please log it as a feature request on
our SourceForge site. As an alternative, if you would wish to 'use'
another service as part of your service, then you could create a wrapper
service or even a service composition, and deploy this as your own
service.

As regards to the problem of importing OWL ontologies, I believe that
this bug has been fixed and will be included in the next Studio release.

SDL is more a platform independent version of WSDL, similar to the
abstract part of WSDL. Perhaps, Soluta can add to this with a more
detailed description.

Hi Andrea,

regarding how you copy the BML, etc from an existing service to your own
service, the way it works now, you just copy it/them!!

However I am working on a tool (BML Wizard) that will allow sMEs  to
explore lots of BML models super fast in order to determine which ones
might be relevant to the SME particular model.

regarding what is SDL different to WSDL, as far as I know SDL is
protocol agnostic (right now we support serialisation of POJOs or "plain
old java objects").

WSDL is SOAP specific and very technical. This is more a swallow (ExE)
question so perhaps the swallow folks could add their views. Also, WSDL
gives you only syntax whereas SDL is designed to work with other parts
of the DBE workflow (BML, SSL, SSL2SDL, etc)

 The correct is to say that a class is related with another class as its
 domain or range. You can do this using the ObjectProperty (since ODM 
offers this kind of property to relate
 instances of one class with the instances of another class). DataProperties 
are used to connect specific data values with an Object (as its range).
