Dear maintainers of db2latex,
db2latex does not work properly with teTeX 3.0 (released in February
this year and included in many operating system distributions now) and
TeXLive 2005 (released this fall): It always produces PDF instead of DVI
files.=20
The reason is that these TeX distributions use pdfetex as the engine
behind latex *and* pdflatex, pdfetex can produce DVI and PDF output.
But the tests in db2latex that try to detect whether PDF or DVI output
were buggy from the beginning (although not invented by you, for sure),
and now fail: They test whether \pdfoutput is *defined*, and assume PDF
output if yes, while in pdfitex it is always defined, but set to 0 if
DVI output is wanted. Even worse, the LaTeX files created by db2latex
*set* \pdfoutput to 1 if they find that it is defined, and therefore
always produce PDF files.
This problem makes db2latex unusable in Debian (and many other
distributions), and breaks out automatic building of package
documentation in some cases. Therefore we need a fix rather quickly,
and would be glad if you would implement this: The maintainers of the
package within Debian are very busy currently, and I'm only the teTeX
maintainer who doesn't know anything about sgml or xml or whatever
language db2latex uses. What I can tell you is how LaTeX files produced
by db2latex should look like, there is an easy and a thorough solution:
- the easy one is to load ifpdf.sty with \usepackage{ifpdf}, and use the
conditional
\ifpdf
% code for PDF output
\else
% code for DVI output
\fi
(the else branch can be left out, \fi is mandatory)
- the thorough one would be to check whether such a discrimination is
needed at all. For example, such a check is frequently used for
hyperref, but in fact this package has output format tests built in
and does not need to be called with an output driver option except in
very special cases.

I hope I'm on the right list. I've just started translating the =20
db2latex file, but:
1. I've noticed that the text in the original English file, and the =20
text in the partly-translated Vietnamese file I've opened, don't match.
There are a lot of strings in the English file which aren't in the =20
Vietnamese file, and a few the other way around.
I don't want to go any further until I know what I should do. Does =20
this mean that my Vietnamese file is out-of-date in some way? Should =20
I copy all the English strings over to the Vietnamese file? I'm happy =20=
to start with a clean copy if that would help.
2. I don't understand how to translate this type of string:

Hi, I'm trying to use db2latex to convert one of my docbook documents to latex but I didn't want to bother installing a command line XSLT processor so I want to use one of the processors embedded in my Oxygen XML editor. And when I launch the transformation (using Saxon 6.5.3) I get an error on line 273 of lists.mod.xsl : Description: E xsl:param must be immediately within a template, function or stylesheet Is it normal ? Hi, I'm using the Debian/Sarge package 0.8pre1-5, and I've noticed that footnotes placed within simplelist members don't show up (although when I place footnotes in paragraph text, or tables they're fine) the call-out number is there, but no text appears in the footer. If I understand correctly, the situation is as follow : 1. From the XML document, db2latex generates a Latin1-encoded document (the xsl:output encoding type is set to ISO-8859-1, cf. docbook.xsl) 2. As the oe ligature is not in that charset, the œ stays untranslated in the LaTeX file. Hello list, When I put an "oe" ligature (Unicode U+0153) in my Docbook document, it comes out in the LaTeX file as "œ". All other letters, including letters comporting diacritic signs and the "ae" ligature come out fine. Is this related to db2latex (and if so, how to fix it) or to my XSL processor (xsltproc) ? Hello,
The XSL template for <para> elements puts an empty line before the
generated paragraph text. I noticed that this can messes the page layout
when the paragraph follows a section title.
The LaTeX code generated is something along the lines of :

\section{Some title}
% empty line
Some stuff, first paragraph
% empty line
Some other stuff, next paragraph
</code>
If the section is placed near the bottom of a page, the title can be
orphaned at the bottom of a page, while the paragraph is on the next
page. On the other hand, if the code is :

Some stuff, first paragraph
% empty line
Some other stuff, next paragraph
% empty line
</code>
the layout is OK.
It can be resolved by changing the para template to :

AFAIK in db2latex the latex style is specified by some XSL parameters. In dblatex very few parameters are supported. * db2latex is a pure XSL transformation. Since I need quite complex tables dblatex uses some perl scripts to translate DocBook tables to LaTeX tables. * A perl script is used to transform the "special" latex characters (e.g. "~", "\"). The purpose is to be quite faster than a conversion done by XSL. * In dblatex the source code does *not* contain document tags that could be extracted automatically. I consider that mixing code and documentation really makes code unreadable (especially in XML) and I actually don't think that mixing both makes documentation maintenance easier. Anyway that has no consequences on the transformation by itsef ;-) * The MathML 2.0 translation is directly taken from xsltml (http://xsltml.sourceforge.net) by Vasil Yaroshevich, which is quite good and complete. * dblatex tries to convert on the fly the graphics of the document (e.g. fig or eps -> pdf). I'm sure that there are other differences but I don't know the latests db2latex changes enough to trace them. Regards, BG |
