Apology not granted. No harm done :-) It's just a matter of getting the wheels running or something. |

Yes, Yes, absolutely. Dancer means a lot to me. I run a tiny little chat server, populated by friends who have been together for the most part, more than 5 years. There is no reason to have such a fine project wither away. We all are busy, we simply need someone who has the interest in this, and that person will come along. Maybe not today, but it will happen. Premature abandonment of the project is not a "good thing". Don't leave 5 minutes before the miracle. Ray R. Jones ad...@go... You are guessing quite right. Also, I have been having little resource problems so that I haven't been able to run and test Dancer full time, and just recently my own computer finally broke and I haven't been able to access my HD with the latest source for a while. I should have set up the CVS up at sourceforge earlier, but I guess we could still do it with the current, latest sources. > I think it is sad that there doesn't seem to be anyone that feels > strong enough for this to really take charge and drive the > development forward. My apologies for the absolutely worst maintenance for any project that anyone has ever seen. -tero |

Hey ho
The thing that is known as Dancer the bot, was created from the mid 90's and
a few years ahead. Bjorn Reese and I spent much of our days hanging on IRC
and we wanted good protection for our favourite channels, while it at the
same time offered a thrilling programming excersise.
I can't remember when anylonger, but I took over as maintainer at some stage
when Dancer was pretty far developed and I held its hand for a year or two
until I found myself not that interested in doing that anymore. I stopped
running IRC bots completely and then developing bots doesn't seem like the
most interesting task to waste your spare time on.
Tero Jänkä who previously had been sending me source contributions took over
as captain of the Dancer ship.
Time has moved on, and as Tero has been quite busy without having had the
opportunity to take Dancer as much forward as he would've wanted (I'm
guessing here, I haven't talked to Tero lately) the development has gone slow
and silent.
The main Dancer mailing list still probably has over a hundred subscribers
(yet there are mostly spams that remind us the list is still around) and I
know that people are still running Dancer bots out there (I can't guess the
numbers though, I have absolutely no idea).
I think it is sad that there doesn't seem to be anyone that feels strong
enough for this to really take charge and drive the development forward. I'm
sure there are fixes to be done, bugs to be removed and features to be added.
I'm saying this just to make you all aware of this. If nothing happens within
this year or so, I intend to throw in my towel and shut down this mailing
list and unsubscribe myself from the supposedly-new ones at sourceforge.
There's no point in keeping a mailing list merely for the purpose of letting
a few spammers annoy us every few months.

Heya :) Changing the couple of lines (60 and 61) below in dancer.h compiles fine here on Redhat Linux. IIRC it's the only source changes you need to make for extended nicknames, not that I've ever had to do it myself. :) /* Max length of nicknames. Some IRC networks (like Dalnet) use wider nicknames. Change here if you run on one of those nets */ #define NICKLEN 15 #define NICKLENTXT "15" /*QUOTE(NICKLEN)*/ See you at the Years some time ;) -- [ *Justin \ TheCrow* : http://www.thepentagon.com/justin : mailto:th...@ch... : SMS mailto:j....@sm... : IRC TheCrow #chataway : ICQ 12907965 : Team *AMIGA* : Powered by Amiga ] On Tue, 8 Feb 2000, Guyver wrote: > hi guys, > i have a dancer 4.15b6 he is running on a Irc network > where the IRCD is 15 NickLen i hae changed the dancer.c > or dancer.h which ever one it was but now the silly thing wont 'make' can you help please ? > > [-= Sy =-] > |

If you still have trouble joining the list(s), just ask me and I'll add you manually. About Dancer documentation; it has been said here before that the documentation for Dancer is 'slightly' outdated, but on the other hand Dancer hasn't really had any major new features for some time, so the documentation that comes with Dancer still describes most of it quite well. > I have a bot up and running on undernet, and generaly it works fine, > but for some reason i can't get it to enforce the channel modes, nor > the channel -l parameter, and especially not the channel key. To "enforce" channel modes see MODE, LIMIT and KEY settings. However, MODE and LIMIT allow CHANOP users to change the (tnsimp) mode(s) and the limit, as operators are assumed to have the knowledge on how to handle these. KEY on the other hand requires level LEVELBOT, ie. LEVELBOT and above users are able to change the channel key even when KEY is set on. > If i set the key, the bot can't get in the channel...:-) Unless you set the CKEY setting for Dancer to that of the channel-key, Dancer wont get in the channel after relaunch. It's not enough to simply set the key for the channel, you have to set the CKEY setting. Try "/msg dancer set" for a list of settings and then "/msg dancer help set <setting>" to get help for a particular setting online. (replace dancer with the nick of your bot:) -tero |

"Hello world!" Are the list options set up properly? I made a quick check through and didn't find anything that needed altering. But maybe you have more experience. -tero |
