I think it's because D2X-XL requires Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable at least 2010. Try installing that: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=26999

Thanks for the tip. I tried the Arne fork. Unfortunately, it suffers from the same issue. In fact, it's worse; with Arne, the hang occurs even if I specify a starting resolution. Specifying a resolution is an easy workaround so I'll stick with that.
D2X-XL is not currently under active development - at least, not the official version. Arne has a fork on GitHub where he made some stability fixes - it might be worth checking if that works for you. https://github.com/arbruijn/d2x-xl
Just curious if there's any progress on this issue. I have an earlier version (.74) installed and it was working fine previously but now (several years after last running it) exhibits this issue. Upgrading to the latest version didn't have any effect. The log file shows the hang occurs while "initializing movies". By experimenting, I found the problem occurs only if I run in fullscreen mode ("-fullscreen 1") and I don't specify a starting resolution (e.g., "-1920x1200", my monitor's native res.)....

Don't know if it changed anything, but after my post above I found and extracted d2x-xl-makefiles.7z. Tried compiling again, and it still errors on make.

D2X-XL doesn't have a ton of bugs. Most things you reported are rather cosmetic. D2X-XL is massively outdated. If I would want to revive it, I would port the entire renderer to a modern rendering engine and if you are looking for offering a single player experience too, copy/adapt and probably improve the AI code. I have been checking the Omega cannon code half of the day today, and it looks fine to me. You may want to limit the frame rate the game is running with if you haven't done so (see the render options menu). I am currently adding a "boost omega cannon" option to the gameplay menu. Checking the option will make the Omega cannon track targets at a greater angle (~30 deg instead of 20 deg), have twice the range and do significantly (4x) more damage. This will make the Omega cannon a borderline cheat...

I might actually look into some of the D2X_XL problems, but when I start looking at the code I want to rewrite it completely ... if I had the time and any chance to earn some serious money with it, I would rebuild it on the Unity engine. No promises though, I am amazed anybody is still using D2X-XL at all. Regarding the misplaces shot exit points: You may want to reinstall the game and make sure all models and textures are in the right folders. Last time I looked into the game (out of nostalgia)...
Did you enable expert settings? You may only find certain menu options when expert options are on.
Weird. I didn't change the make files for years, they used to work. If they need changes, that's beyond the effort I can and want to spend on D2X-XL. I have stopped coding for it for years.
Did you chose the extended level format? Such things only work in the d2x-xl specific enhanced level format.

Some of your model data seems to be flawed, since the exit points of these shots are determined by the ship model in the game (the digital 3d represenation of it has "markers" (actually coordinates denoting a spot on the gun barrels telling the game were to let the shots come out from). Hi, you cannot select guns you have a stronger version of; However, you can change that somewhere in the settings. The Omega never had problems for me, and I have stopped working on D2X-XL for at least 3 or 4 years, sorry. You are probably using low res plasma shot images. Try to use the hires textures. Hey, i do'nt have the problems from 1) and from 2) concering Plasma and Phoenix, but I also think that the Omega Cannon is way too weak and its auto aiming doesn't work at all. I enjoyed using it a lot in original D2, due to it's unusal characteristics. Is there a possibility to fix that (as well as the problems mentioned by Conrad Roetgen?

This bug only occurs when you boot up the game, load a level (or do a cold start on any level). But oddly enough, the bug doesn't occur when leaving a level and reload or progress to another level in multi-level missions.

It also affects non-xl levels that have any base textures replaced by TGA (not BMP) format textures then save the level and reload the level, the texture will look corrupted. but when importing a bmp texture with the corresponding pallete it works fine and dandy
