New windows is here and 14 million users have upgraded their old OS for "free".
Yes, you get it without paying cash to Microsoft but at the same time you lose two more valuable things than cash: control of your computer and your privacy. In sense, you are the product.
And when Im talking about privacy I don't mean the settings, there are already plenty of articles out there how people try to keep Microsoft from snooping their files. No, what I mean is their new Terms of service that they just changed lately.
You have read it before upgrading haven't you? No? Too bad.
Then here's the snip from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/default.aspx
Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to:
So basically, what that means is that Microsoft gives itself total control over all your data. If that is not a perfect example of DDR style spying OS then I don't know what is....
Even if I were to live in somekind of fantasy land (like some, unnamed tech bloggers out there) where this does not really matter, that Microsoft "needs" to have access to our data to improve "experience" or that because Google Android and iOS have done this before (seriously? you compare mobile phone OSes to desktop???) it would still be very hard for me to find any good reason to upgrade.
After searching very hard for what new, usefull feature to me, this new OS offers, I could only find one: DirectX 12. But because I only play occasionally nowadays even that won't be enought to lure me. Need Cortana? Nope. Always connected cloud apps? Nope. Bing? Absolutely hate it.
So there really is no killer features for me. How about speed? Is it faster? Nope. Tried it at work and did not find any performance advantage over Windows 7. Better security? Too early to tell yet but I really doubt it.
So thanks but no thanks Microsoft, I pass and keep my Windows 7 untill 2020. And if no good replacement appears by then, then I will switch 100% to Linux (already doing 50% / 50% of my work with these two OSes)
