If it is available to you, I would suggest you upgrade to Red Hat 7.2. 
That is what I run at work and at home, and the jdk 1.4 beta 3
performance is very nice.  I don't do any visually heavy stuff, so I
have never really profiled that end of the performance spectrum under
linux.
