Is Swing that much better than AWT?

I ask that question, because I wonder if I've been keeping myself from some really wonderful java packages in error...

My impression of Swing (that I have gleaned over the past few years) is that it can be bulky, and mis-used in places...and that it can slow down response times dramatically..due to the fact that AWT ties in much more closely with the native-peer...

Is that impression wrong?  Do the benchmarks for well-written applications in AWT not come in notably different than those for well-written Swing?  In that case, I would love to switch...although I must admit that I will need some pointers on this...
