If you use the Oracle 12c Release 1 instant client you can access an Oracle 10g Release 2 or higher database. Anything earlier than that would require the use of the Oracle 11g Release 2 instant client instead. Since Oracle 10g Release 1 is no longer supported the use of the Oracle 12c Release 1 instant client should work perfectly for you.
