AFAIK Oracle 8i does not support the TIMESTAMP datatype itself.

We had a similar problem using Java and JDBC against Oracle 8i.

Ah, then the support in the OCI would only be for accessing an Oracle
9i server. That makes sense and triggers a memory that I was not quite
able to retrieve. Thanks. :-)
