The problem is likely an issue with bind variable values or type mismatches but you can only really find out by testing and debugging. Nothing obvious to my mind from what you have written. You can make things a lot simpler, though. cursor.execute(sql, record_number = mrn, s_time = start_time, e_time = end_time) Questions to consider: If you replace the bind variables with constants does the query return as expected? What are the actual types of the column values that are being queried? What are the actual types of the bind variables being passed in? Can you issue the same query in SQL*Plus and have it return as expected? Hopefully some of those will help you diagnose the problem. I've had a few of these and they can be very painful to figure out. They're "obvious" once you figure them out, of course, but getting there can be very time consuming. Good luck! Anthony |

whatstr="SELECT field111 from MSG_ARCHIVE where "+searchField+" =:record_number and field4 between :s_time and :e_time" curs.prepare(whatstr) curs.execute(None, {'record_number':mrn,'s_time':start_time, 'e_time':end_time}) searchField is actually field111, mrn is a set number (9 digits), the start_time and end_time are oracle timestamps. This simply hangs -- no error, no return. If I hit ctrl-c, it simply says keyboard interrupt (no kidding...). I am having difficulties with a python script, that was working with our 10g database and 11g client, but now does not work... whatstr=('select '+out_fields+' from MSG_ARCHIVE where '+searchField+' = :record_number and field4 between :s_time and :e_time') print whatstr curs.execute(whatstr,{'record_number':mrn, 's_time':start_time, 'e_time':end_time}) Can anyone think of why this would have changed? I can run either a record_number search or a "between timestamp" search and have it work fine. Thank you very much for your time! |

I only joined the mailinglist last friday and the Sourceforge archives are not the most convenient to get up to speed. It took me some time to find the references to the client_info discussion. PS I don't think I found a link on the homepage, and since Sourceforge is where the website is hosten, people will automatically look there. Maybe you can disable the CVS and SVN service on Sourceforge ? -- -- dag wieers, da...@wi..., http://dag.wieers.com/ -- dagit linux solutions, in...@da..., http://dagit.net/ [Any errors in spelling, tact or fact are transmission errors] |

Hi, I expect this to not be possible. I am in the situation where a tool written in perl is allowed to access the database, but a tool using python is not (with the same credentials). When adding a symlink from ./perl to /usr/bin/python and using that as the shebang does work. Given the fact that the client_identifier is so easily circumvented I was wondering whether it would be possible to modify the client_identifier used upon connect() rather than having to resort to such workarounds. (Yes, I know changing the ACL is probably the best way forward and is in fact formally requested, but due to complex corporate processes this may take weeks to get executed anyway...) I know it is possible to modify the client_identifier once connected, but it seems useful to also be able to modify the client_identifier upon connect, maybe as an argument to connect(). If it is not currently possible, could it be implemented in cx_Oracle ? Kind regards, -- -- dag wieers, da...@wi..., http://dag.wieers.com/ -- dagit linux solutions, in...@da..., http://dagit.net/ [Any errors in spelling, tact or fact are transmission errors] |

Hi Johnny, Unfortunately no assumptions can be made about the best encoding and that needs to be set up by whoever is using the Oracle client. Fortunately you can set the environment variable in your profile or the global profile and never have to worry about it again. Glad you got things figured out. Hi Anthony, After setting the encoding from the code, it started returning characters correctly. *Line to add before making oracle connection from python code:* os.environ["NLS_LANG"] = ".UTF8" Is there a way to set this as default for cx_Oracle module rather than setting it in the code? Hi Johnny, You need to make sure you are setting your NLS_LANG environment variable correctly. If it is set to a character set that does not support the characters you are trying to retrieve you will get question marks. You can try querying through SQL*Plus first and getting things working there. Once they are working there you should be fine with cx_Oracle as well. There are other options available but they are far more complicated and you need a good understanding of character sets, encodings and the like. I would try setting NLS_LANG first. :-) Anthony On Thu, Aug 9, 2012 at 12:23 PM, johnny jebaraj <joh...@gm...> wrote: > Hi All, > > I am new to Oracle as well as to cx_Oracle forum. > > Recently I installed cx_Oracle module in my Red Hat linux machine and tried > to do some DB fetch[select] from oracle. > > Looks like the accented character from my Oracle table is being retrieved as > ? symbol (or) replaced to another character, not sure what was the problem. > > Example: > > In DB --> output from python program > > Caché --> Cache > Permian–Triassic --> Permian?Triassic > > Did anyone faced this problem while using this module? > > I am using cx_Oracle-5.1.2 and Oracle 11g Database. > > Any help to solve this problem is very much appreciated. > > Thanks, > > Johnny > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Live Security Virtual Conference > Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and > threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. Hi All, I am new to Oracle as well as to cx_Oracle forum. Recently I installed cx_Oracle module in my Red Hat linux machine and tried to do some DB fetch[select] from oracle. Looks like the accented character from my Oracle table is being retrieved as ? symbol (or) replaced to another character, not sure what was the problem. *Example:* In DB --> output from python program Caché --> Cache Permian–Triassic --> Permian?Triassic Did anyone faced this problem while using this module? I am using cx_Oracle-5.1.2 and Oracle 11g Database. Any help to solve this problem is very much appreciated. Thanks, Johnny |

Just a bit of feedback. I did manage to get this working by explicit programming, but would prefer .callfunc() if possible: curs.execute('SELECT * FROM TABLE(get_status(5624966))') result = curs.fetchone() From: Brannon, Terrence M Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2012 1:20 PM To: 'cx-...@li...'
