I guess that your are using the market version.

HTC devices (nexus one inculded) has a bug called PSP bug. On wifi when data packets arrive and screen is off it's received with a high latency.

However, I developed a workaround for that. (It's the setting "keep awake while in call" available in settings > User interface).

If you use market version on Nexus One it's enabled automatically, but maybe not on the Desire (depends on the branding of the phone). In last development version (available on this website), it should be automatically activated for your desire too since I've improved the rule that automatically turn on this setting.

So two things would be interesting for me :
    * Upgrade to latest dev version on the desire and see if "Keep awake while in call" setting is turned to on then (Note that on dev version you have to switch to expert setting mode to see this setting : while in settings press menu and select "expert mode" then go in User interface and see if keep awake while in call is activated.
--> if not I'd be really interested by logs on your phone (specially device brand and device name (not commercial name but the android parameter) (to send me logs the easier way is to use Help (menu in csipsimple dialer), > record logs, then help again and stop & send logs. Then send it by mail with as reference this issue number

    * Then try (if not already activated, activate it) with Keep awake while in call setting on. If it doesn't help, it's probably something else. And if so I'll need more infos about your network configuration, and if stun/ice is activated on both devices.

Unfortunately, due to this bug from HTC, it's not possible to turn screen off. Screen will be dimmed while in call.

You'll find no SIP application that turn screen off on wifi and works for your device.
Don't blame apps for that, blame HTC and their driver.

You can read the following issue : issue 71. There is a link to the corresponding bug on android project. (However should be a bug open @ HTC too).

I heard that Cyanogen's custom ROM has a wifi driver that fix this HTC bug. Maybe worth to try with this custom ROM if you are confident in ROM flashing.

However, just to reassure you : I keep screen on, *only* while you are in communication. Then your screen policy will continues apply. So you'll just consume a little bit more while on communication... but again, there is no choice. Another note, the workaround still take into account the proximity sensor and add an overlay that prevent you from unwanted action. As I own a Nexus One this workaround is really well tested.

Anyways, do you think 3G HSPDA will NOT support GSM codec?  Because mostly that's choppy comes from.  I will try WIFI to verify if it is choppy or not, and WIFI shouldn't be issue I'm connected at work which is a main trunk that's huge bandwidth (read 300Mbps down, 50Mbps up).  Though of course WIFI is only G but that should be sufficient for GSM...

Instead of using BRAND I use PRODUCT to detect phones (cause brand is used by carrier that re-brand device).
