What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Set up CSIPSimple with SIP account for outbound calling only on HTC Evo
2. Make call, once call connects switch to dialpad
3. When raising phone back to face, the screen shuts off, at this point the audio gets very choppy and unintelligible or cuts out completely.  When moving the phone away and the screen turns back on, sometimes it will come back.  I have "Lock Wifi" turned on.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
0.00-13 HTC Evo running Android 2.2 Froyo

Happy to provide debug logs, etc.

This may primarily affect HTC handsets and the Nexus One.  Lock Wifi does not prevent these phones from entering Power Save Polling mode on the Wifi interface when the screen shuts down.

The problem is already fixed in csipsimple :
    https://code.google.com/p/csipsimple/issues/detail?id=71

    So to solve the problem
Settings > User interface > Keep Awake while in call.

It's automatically checked for nexus one and htc desire. But I didn't know that it also affect the htc evo.
So could you please give me the device name. Install an app such as DeviceInfo and check the device field... it's the codename of the device so that I can identify it in csipsimple and also automatically turn on the option at installation time :)

    Thx in advance ! :D

Hope that helps.  I hope HTC/Google will release a fix for this problem so the screen can be turned off.  It would be nice to disable the touch sensor on the screen when it's next to the user's face during a call if you don't do that now.

It's already done for the touch sensor (in fact there is a screen overlay). Did you try the " Keep Awake while in call." setting? It should work flawlessly.

I have a nexus one and proximity sensor is used to display an overlay locker that should disappear when your face is far from the screen...
So you'll not risk to touch something that you would not touch ;)

Thanks a lot for device . I'll add this to the default settings (but you can still change it by hand while I don't release something).

I'll solicitate you when I'll do a dev build if you are ok to check that default parameter is well taken into account

I'd be happy to try a dev build when you have one.  :)

There is some small progress on this point, but doesn't seems to be a priority for them. If you are interested :
    https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9781

However my solution is not so bad for end user. Screen is in dim mode (after android timeout), the overlay prevent from doing unwanted action ... well the only thing is that it consume a little bit more batter than if it was screen off. But screen in dim mode consume less than screen on.

    Ok thanks for the report.
When you'll get time to test it :
    https://code.google.com/p/csipsimple/downloads/detail?name=CSipSimple_0.00-13-07.apk
(You have to uninstall the market version before installing this one).

A release was already planned today, so I've just included this fix among other. (Don't think it is to hurry you ;) )

Again, many thanks for the report ! Guess that it was really annoying for Evo users ! All the more so as mainstream users don't really search to know why it doesn't work :).

However, my ear still does things on the touch screen. I don't know what this previously-mentioned overlay should look like, but I assume it is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=6AWZgjsit4g#t=55s . I don't have that. Is there any option to activate this overlay? I tried inverting the proximity sensor, but that did not solve the problem. The overlay never shows up. I am using the current nightly version.
