Are you running the installer as root? If yes, how did you login? I mean: does
X run under user root as well? If not this might be the problem: you are not
allowed to use another users X-Server, not even if you're root. There is a way
to change that (temporarily, everthing else wouldn't make sense and was a
security issue), but the easy way is to start X as root or start a second X for
root.
