Hi
This is my first posting to the list, so please excuse any breaches of
protocol.
I've just set up my PC with linux (a RedHat derivative) and I'd happily
re-format the Windows partition and never look back, if I could find a
replacement for the role Microsoft Outlook plays in my life now. I read the
rationale for CSCMail with interest, and am keen to try it, since it sounds
like it might take me a step closer, but I'm having problems getting it to
build.
I've used the installer and it got stuck looking for the various Gnome
libraries. So I spent all day rebuilding gnome from the helix website. Every
component is now up to date. But still the CSC Mail installer seems to have
problems finding a couple of directories that it expects to have created.
This is what I get when I run the installer:

Success! I've alltered the install script to call for HTML Parser 3.18 and MIME tools 5.314 and it now works and runs. Can't vouch for whether they've made the program any less stable, of course. I think you'll need to go through the mirror quite extensively. In addition to the two components which must be changed, I spotted at least one more (stringy) where the version you are calling for is the oldest one left on the ftp server - I suppose it will disappear too sometime soon... Thanks! I have kinda left the Perl install script as a low priority since I
am focusing on the c-client based C version. This gives CSCMail IMAP
support, no Database dependancies, faster at everything, NNTP support,
"normal" local mailstore, and other cool features. (use Pine and CSCMail to
read the same mailstore if you like, as CSCMail can read ~/mail or whatever
format you keep your local mail in.)
This means there is no need for a "cscmail console" version (just use Pine)
and that CSCMail will support whatever protocols and mailstores the c-client
supports (right now, mbox, maildir and some others, as well as POP3, IMAP4,
SMTP, NNTP)
Hope to have something usable released soon... (I recently switched to an
IMAP based mailstore for my personal mail, and since CSCMail didn't support
IMAP, this has "re-energized" my development efforts.)

Yes you will be able to migrate from CSCMail perl to CSCMail 2.0 ... If
you run 1.7.x I have recently fixed the MBOX export feature so that it makes
a c-client compatible mbox.... I will be adding further enhancements to this
export (right now the dates get munged) and also include a "standalone"
export script that will walk your folder tree and export all your mail to
mbox format

Please help! I downloaded 1.7.9 from sourceforge, and unpacked it. I thought I followed the instructions in the documents, but now I can't run it at all. I get: pixmap is not of type Gtk::Gdk::Pixmap at /usr/local/bin/cscmail line 5067 when it runs, and then the window closes. If I comment out that line, I get similar messages about other pixmaps elsewhere in the code. Have I not got the right widget set installed? 1.6.1 worked OK. Thanks, Nick |

Thanks, Red, but I'm no closer a solution. There are pixmaps called earlier
than the new message pixmap, and they don't provoke an error. And they're
all in the same directory, which is identified correctly by the
$prefs{'PixmapDir'} call. I'm baffled.

The pixmaps are by default in /usr/local/lib/cscmail/pixmaps/THEME
but CSCMail looks in ~/.cscmailrc for a tag
PixmapDir: /usr/local/lib/cscmail/pixmaps/aqua (or whatever theme)
Make sure that the PixmapDir tag in your rc points to a dir that exists and
contains pixmaps... (make sure it doesn't point to, say:
/usr/local/lib/cscmail/pixmaps (no theme) )

Maybe the program could somehow check if the .cscmailrc file is older than the program file (i.e. the .rc predates the version installed, and automatically call the setup utility? I dealt with it by renaming the .rc file and then going through setup again. It's fine now. Thanks to all.
