Hi, my name is Grant Taylor. I'm looking for a different MUA than Netscape Mail. I've grown tired of NS MUA in such that I have not found a way to change the HELO / EHLO string that the MUA sends when talking to a server. Is there such a capability with CSCMail? Grant... |

As the user who is currently running X windows, issue the command: xhost +local: This will allow all local users to connect to the X server to open windows. (Including root or any other local account) It is a minor security risk, if someone else logs on to your machine via telnet, they could then open windows on your display. So when you are done installing CSCMail, I recommend you do xhost -local: to reset the permissions back to default. -Count Zero ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Ibbotson" <ri...@sh...> To: <csc...@li...> Sent: Saturday, September 21, 2002 1:01 PM Subject: [Cscmail-devel] Debian Installation > Hi > > I've been trying to get CSC Mail to install for two years now. Hi I've been trying to get CSC Mail to install for two years now. So far no one has been able to tell me why it doesn't install. Just trying on a Debian 3.0 testing/unstable machine and it refused to work from /home/user when I tried the CSC Mail installer. Tried as root and it said... " Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Client is not authorised to connect to Server Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0 at (eval 1) line 1" Had the same problem with Mandrake and SuSE machines. I've had a look at the Debian docs and can't find any answers to this one. Can anyone explain how I can get my X-server to allow CSCMailInstaller to open up and install CSC Mail ? -- Thanks Richard www.sheflug.co.uk |

I'm having trouble to make cscmail work. First, it was very difficult to find the correct modules to install. After, I ran CSCMailInstaller, and it didn't give-me any errors. But when I try to run cscmail, occurs the following thing: [syndson@Trm-04 syndson]$ cscmail Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/bin/cscmail line 55. Can't locate object method "init" via package "Gtk::XmHTML" at /usr/bin/cscmail line 58. What can be happening? Thanks for your help, Syndson Silva. (sy...@li...) |

Hia, I was overjoyed at finally finding an email proggie for linux that meets demands all the others won't. Problem is, I'm having difficulties: The installer script quits after the line "Found Lingua::Ispell" with absolutely no explenation. It just drops me back to console. Thought you might want to know. Eventually I managed to compile it, having had some problems with the GtkXmHTML dependencies, as I don't know perl from a flying rhino. Since I figured mySQL would be a good idea, I've installed all the required deb packages(yep, running debian woody) and I get some access denied error for the empty database I just created, which means I'm back to CSV which you state is a bit sluggish way of doing things.. Cheers, Kacper Wysocki (please cc me any replies to this message as I'm not subscribed to the list) |

I installed CSCMail, and to what I can tell all the dependancies. I couldn't get the install script to work, so I did it manually. ** The Install script wouldn't install CSCMail itself, but I don't think it installed all the dependencies either though.** Any how, I have 1.7.x taken from CVS a couple days ago. Here's the error I am getting: Script started on Tue Apr 2 17:41:15 2002 bmeyer@witness:~$ cscmail& [1] 8648 bmeyer@witness:~$ Can't locate IO/Wrap.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/lib/cscmail /usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/MIME/Parser.pm line 134. > CSCmail is the wrong place because it won't benefit anyone who doesn't > use CSCMail. I don't think I would go so far as to say it is the wrong place. Many clients - at least in Windows - allow for the client to use an external virus scanner to determine if attachments and other content could pose a risk to the system. This would be beneficial to others not using CSCMail as it would lessen the risk of passing on a virus in an attachment. Sure it would be done in the MTA, but not everyone uses one. At least for the time being, I download my mail off of the school MTA's, and I still check for virii myself - they have gotten through. ** I haven't had the time to set up my own MTA yet, but will get to it hopefully in the near future. ** In any case, having the option to execute an external virus scanner would be useful, and is a worthy pursuit. I'm not sure it is something we should devote lots of time to, but if people want to help better the system by adding frivolous items like this, then so be it! Witness |

CSCmail is the wrong place because it won't benefit anyone who doesn't use CSCMail. Best, get a virus scanner. They are available for Linux, just to protect your window-blown friends. If you don't want to go that far, look for mail filters that can identify attachments - so far as I'm concerned ANY executable content is bad news. -- Cheers John Summerfield Microsoft's most solid OS: http://www.geocities.com/rcwoolley/ Note: mail delivered to me is deemed to be intended for me, for my disposition. ============================== If you don't like being told you're wrong, be right! |

> Unless CSCMail has a common API with some other email clients it's not > going to be affected by any virus written for those. I wasn't thinking of it like that - I know my system is going to be pretty safe from viruses. But I'd like to be able to test attachments that get sent to me so that I know whether or not I can safely pass them on to my windows users, and I'd like to be able to tell someone who's sent me a virus that they've done so. Regardless of the insignificant risk from virus infection, I still think it'd a useful thing to have. Gavin. -- Gavin Brown e: gav...@uk... w: http://jodrell.uk.net/ |

Unless CSCMail has a common API with some other email clients it's not going to be affected by any virus written for those. Unless it provides some means of running executable content then it cannot be affected by any virus. If you want to scan for undesirable content, better to it in procmail or your NTA. -- Cheers John Summerfield Microsoft's most solid OS: http://www.geocities.com/rcwoolley/ Note: mail delivered to me is deemed to be intended for me, for my disposition. ============================== If you don't like being told you're wrong, be right! |

Hi guys, It occured to me that it wouldn't be very difficult to implement a virus scanner within CSCMail, using File::Scan. Attachments could be scanned as they're retrieved, and an alert could be shown to the user. Admittedly, the risk of infection from a virus is quite low on a UNIX system, but being able to detect when you've received an infected document would be quite useful if you happen to be a UNIX user in an office of Windows boxen. I've been thinking about developing a patch, any thoughts before I give it a go? I haven't hacked the CSCMail code before, but it's something I've been thinking of doing for a while now. I'm surprised no-one has done one of these already - here's an icon theme for CSCMail (probably works with Protno as well) that usings the stock GNOME icons created by tigert. Enjoy. Hi, I was wondering if you ever thought about using either the DES or RSA modules for storing the POP account passwords? Although, this may involve having to type the password in every time. If that were the case, then you could at least store it with crypt() the first time and then compare the given pass with the stored one. erick never stop questioning www.jeb.ca |

Couple of things: There is no a mirror of the CSCMail site at http://www.cscmail.eu.com/. The box the site is on lives at Telehouse in London and should be a lot faster for people in european countries. Secondly, I've created an icon set I want to use with CSCMail - I assumed it was just a matter of copying the directory into /usr/lib/cscmail/pixmaps, but CSCMail isn't picking up the new directory, even after I use the recan option, and when I edit .cscmailrc to change the PixmapDir option, CSCMail segfaults with the following error: [gavin@gavin gavin]$ cscmail HTML Widget is: XmHTML pixmap is not of type Gtk::Gdk::Pixmap at /usr/local/bin/cscmail line 4457. Segmentation fault (core dumped) The images are in XPM format, what could be the cause of this? They have to be hosted in the UK or Sweden? You can feel free to point those domains at the existing host if you like? It's IP is 208.56.251.41 .. feel free to point any cscmail.* related domains to that host as you like... Of course, if you want to mirror it in Europe for speed reasons, also, feel free to mirror at will!!!
