In the end, the application receives an SWT.OpenDocument event.
It's a bit tricky to find the source code for the native launcher, it's moved every time I looked for it.
This time I found mention of it on http://www.eclipse.org/equinox/framework/, but from there I can't seem to find the actual source code.
.. but I think that's what you would need to inspect to see how --launcher.openFile locates the running instance.
