#226 Update and rewrite code for C to C++ conversion

Attila, here is the first set of changes I made. Most of the code changes are a result of removing get_string_parameter_pointer, and having get_string_parameter return a string instead of char*.

Code looks good. but could you add the curly brackets to if statements in which you did change in the conditions.
