Currently, all files that need to be retrieved are cached onto the server (currently onto the hard disk) and then resent to the Browser. This allows for less complexity in retrying in case of IO errors on the Browser side. But there is an overhead of memory / file storage on the server and the delay in resending to the Browser (especially when deployed on Google App Server, or other web app servers).

Direct streaming during file-retrieval should be available and up to the user to choose this or the server-caching option.
