These patches do two things:

  • Reduce the cost of balms from 250 to 50.
  • Increase the value multiplier on all balm artifacts by a factor of 5, except the balm of first aid.

The end result is that the balm of first aid is cheaper, by a factor of 5. Balms of first aid are now value 50, and others range from 250 to 1000, instead of all balms ranging from 250 to 1000. This means that it will be more reasonable for novice adventurers to buy a few for general use, and will reduce their abuse as a money generator if their recipe is adjusted in the future.

This balance tweak is probably not perfect, and more advice is welcome.

The lib/artifacts file is generated during the compile process or from running make collect.

Can you create your "balmbalance.diff" from your archetypes directory instead, like you did for the "balmreduce.diff" ?

If it is indeed a compile-time file, I'm having a hard time finding the source files. Can you point out exactly where they are?

The browsable sources are here: https://sourceforge.net/p/crossfire/code/HEAD/tree/arch/trunk/

These produce lib/artifacts when the server gets compiled.

I've been trawling through that source branch several times, I just can't find where the artifact definitions are. I even checking inside .arc files, but found nothing useful. Are you sure lib/artifacts is not just a static file, since it appears to have comments and the like?

Oops, I'm sorry, you seem to be right.

For that matter, should the file be dynamically generated? Or maybe it should be moved to the arches directory, but kept as-is.

Committed in r20905 and r20906, thanks!
