#256 Dark elfs are not always running away from PC

server (359)

Dark elfs normally run away from the PC and fire arrows
from distance. But if the player reaches a tile right
next to a dark elf, he stops running away and waits to
be killed. (If the player steps away, the dark elf
resumes to run away.)

You can find dark elfs in the random maps below

I believe that behavior was designed so that things set to
run wouldn't be helpless and would attack if something
catches up to it, however in the case of things with ranged
attacks (i.e. dark elves), that is not desirable.

I believe the correct solution would be to not stop and
attack, if they have a ranged attack available to use, and
only stop and stop to fight back at close range if they are

    Does this make sense?

    Makes sense, yeah :)

I'm not so sure. Most players can run faster than dark elves can, so if the player is running toward the dark elf, and the dark elf tries to run away, it's just going to get hit in the back a lot and killed while it runs. It might make more sense for it to stand and fight, because even though it's not trapped against a wall, it's "trapped" by the player's higher speed.

So, is the behaviour correct, or no? :)

I still do not think the current behavior is correct:
    1. I believe dark elves keep firing arrows when fleeing. If this is true, IMO they definitely should not revert to melee if they have any missiles left. That is: I agree with qal21's proposal.
    2. To counter aaron_baugher's argument of fast players against slow(er) dark elves: make the dark elves not always run directly away from the player but make them sometimes (or always if adjacent to a player) turn 45 degrees. This will make it much harder for a player to kill an dark elf by just running into its direction. (OTOH - it might make dark elves even more annoying to kill...)
