A couple of suggestions, re-start Vim/Cream after each:
1. Rename your ~/.cream to ~/.cream-bak
2. Verify some Vim settings at the Vim command line:
3. Try removal and re-installation with apt-get.
4. Re-install manually:
a. Download Cream source code:
b. Unpack it at a terminal:
tar -xvf cream-0.39.tar
c. Install as root, in the resulting directory
