It seems some feature in vim that is required for this to work is not
built into your vim executable.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you could post the complete results of:

^O:version

That is a good idea, but: seems copy&paste have some problems too (at least from the status panel); can't find out how to copy the text (feel a bit stupid here, must say...).

It starts out saying:
