No
Spells are not using mana, even if casting on monsters. Note that Invocations use mana, but it seems that Shining One powers are mana-free to. I tested Hill Orc Priest with Beogh - smiting power is using mana.
What version are you playing? Tiles/non-tiles? OS?

From duplicate:
in latest 0.5.2 version of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup probably every spell (i
haven't tested every one), some Invocations and special abilities (some
Demonspawn powers, turning invisible by ring) are NOT USING MANA. It makes
playing spellcasters extremel

As jpeg said, more information required. I can't reproduce this in current 0.5.

I am playing 0.5.2 non-tiles on Vista. I'm getting the same bug where spells aren't using mana. So far all I've really tested are shock, magic dart, conjure flame, and the vampire's bat form ability. None of these seem to use up any magic power under any circumstances.

Hmm, I'm unsure what other details to include...Your mention of XP prompted me to try and run the game in compatibility mode for XP, but I still experience the same bug. Another weird anomaly I experienced today was with the Death god granted abilities: Animate Remains actually takes it's 1 magic(the only thing I've had so far actual cost any magic), but the ability that recalls your created undead doesn't take the 2MP it's supposed to. I continue to have all spells cast by all race and class combinations(at least lower level ones) cost absolutely nothing, except for hunger.

Ok! I've just figured it out. After poking around a bit, I found that I had downloaded the 5.0.2 dos, because it is listed as the newest file on sorceforge. I have since downloaded the 5.0.2win version, and it does not have this bug. That's probably the reason you guys couldn't reproduce it; It appears to only exist in the dos version(though I'm unsure as to why you would use that version since a win version exists anyway).

This is interesting. On Win XP 0.5.2, the sourceforge download, non-tiles or tiles, I can't reproduce it. Keep the details coming. :)
