#1 cramfs file system size limit

Why does mkcramfs limit file system size to a little
over 256MB (272MB to be exact)? Is there any way to
increase this to 512MB? I have been struggling to get a
basic understanding of cramfs. If there are any sites
that discuss it, that would be good to know as well.

Could you tell me why this limit is present and if it
could be expanded, even if I have to try to do it myself?
