Apple has released iOS 11 beta 4 for developers only. The final version of iOS 11 should be available in September, but it still has some flaws as of now. Apple has completely redesigned the look and feel the iPad for a major update. Google also released its final developer preview for Android O. We can expect to see the final version of Android O in August. The update includes autofill, better battery life, picture-in-picture support, and better notification systems. Developers should test their apps on both systems in preparation for the final launches soon. TechCrunch has more on Apple (https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/24/apple-just-dropped-ios-11-beta-4-for-developers/) and Google’s (https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/24/google-releases-the-final-android-o-developer-preview/) releases. ** Virtually (ad)ded ------------------------------------------------------------ VR ads let users immerse themselves in a branded world, and the format has just gotten a big boost with last week’s announcement from Unity. ‘Virtual Room’ is a new interactive VR ad format Unity plans to roll out next year. The ads will be completely opt-in - literally. Users will be able to “walk through” doors to enter the branded experience. Naturally, VR ads still are incredibly expensive to design, and many people aren’t using VR headsets today. But Unity’s confident. “You have 100% of the audience’s attention. In today’s media landscape, that’s worth a lot.” Wired has the full story (https://www.wired.com/story/vr-ads-are-almost-here/) . ** Mixed messages ------------------------------------------------------------ 1.82 billion people will use mobile messaging apps in 2017 - a 15.5% increase from last year. There will be 243 million new users on this i category of apps with 63% coming from China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, and the United States. An average of 66.5% of mobile phone users use messaging apps globally. In Africa and the Middle East, only 22.7% of mobile phone owners use these apps. The main issues surround Limit Ad Tracking (LAT), app open latency, and re-downloaded apps. Apple tends to be very protective of information on its server, but Tune argues that Apple can still provide developers with better information.
