In the past, developers thought of players as either hardcore or casual gamers. However, a recent report by Google (http://services.google.com/fh/files/blogs/who_plays_mobile_games.pdf) shows that there are 5 distinct categories of players: connected enthusiasts, playful explorers, influenced players, tentative followers, and passive players. Google learned that demographics isn’t what differentiates the segments - it’s social behaviors and passion for games. The segments also aren’t boxed into specific game genres. What does this all mean for developers? Don’t fall for demographic stereotypes. Take the new segments into account when redesigning your game and adding new features. And tailor your UA strategy accordingly. A recent report by Soomla found that the top 20% of mobile users account for 80% of ad revenue for apps. It also turns out that, in some apps, those who generate the most impressions aren’t the users who create the bulk of ad revenue - likely because the eCPM of the impressions shown to some users are much higher than others. Additionally, those that do generate the most revenue in a given month account for 67% of ad revenues the next month, and the revenue these “ad whales” deliver is 6x higher than revenue generated by ad minnows. Since users don’t usually shift segments, those who produce high eCPMs early do so consistently going forward. VentureBeat has more on this story (https://venturebeat.com/2017/06/22/soomla-top-20-of-mobile-users-account-for-80-of-ad-revenue/) . ** Playables are a winning formula ------------------------------------------------------------ 91% of users believe that ads today are more intrusive today than they were 3 years ago. As the number of gamers climbs to over 66%, advertisers must find a way to connect with users. This is where playable ads come in. Playables have click through rates 7x higher than video ads, and they increase retention rates and lifetime values of users acquired. Can non-gaming apps capitalize on this trend? Of course. The key is to “gamify” an aspect of the app and make it competitive for the user. Creativity is key here. If it doesn’t make sense to gamify your app, think about how to make it interactive for the user by giving them choices. Users love to choose, get them to choose you. Considering 84% of consumers watch video on mobile, this is a critical challenge to overcome. 46% of marketers are having issues identifying metrics to measure their performance with mobile video. There are over 15 different metrics available, but marketers aren’t sure which to use.
