Okay -- I just submitted the patch against CVS HEAD to the patch tracker.
 It seems that 1.12.1 fixed a number of the issues that I had in 1.12.0,
making the patch somewhat less interesting but hopefully still worthwhile.

Please let me know if you have any problems with the patch.
