Maybe it's just early (and I'm jetlagged), but I just installed CppCMS
(on Linux) and can't figure out what to do next.

Is there a Getting Started Guide?

Got there  http://cppcms.sourceforge.net/wikipp/en/page/main then click on
the version you're using.
You'll get on a page like this one with tutorials :
http://cppcms.sourceforge.net/wikipp/en/page/cppcms_1x

Each tutorial page explain basics.
