Nothing that's been suggested so far would break your existing 
configurations. Basically, we're trying to get you closer to the default 
configuration which will support your users as well as the imapcopy (or 
imapsync) application.

If IMAPDSTART=y, and courier isn't listening on 143, then something is 
wrong.  The script trace I suggested should help you figure out why the 
imap server isn't starting (or is listening on a different port?).
