#135 keyboard problems

Seemingly since MacOSX 10.4.8 or 9 I have some problems to use Chicken of the VNC appropriately between Macs. Special characters /&()=?*... are mapped ununderstandable for me, typed e.g. in iTerm. As workaround I am using the apple keybord overview.
Is there any experience how to restore a reliable keyboard mapping?
