hi everybody, i just joined here. i'm a timbuktu user since mac 2fx times (tb remote). it does a great job for a price. want to learn about alternatives, as tb is just not economic at over a $100 for every new lic. i had heard good things about chicken before, but never used it. so i visited the forum on the website, there was near zero activity, and it was... er.. it was so very empty , almost scary. 1. is chicken alive, kickin' and under further development? 2. where else do you chicken people meet? (even these mailinglists seem to have very few members) 3. what should i know, when changing from timbuktu to chicken? 4. tiger? on a quick usenet search i saw somebody say he had it working on tiger. can you people confirm this? 5. anybody have a suggestion, even another remote app, i should try? hey, thanks in advance for any input. luca |

Hi Luca, Welcome! > i had heard good things about chicken before, but never used it. so > i visited the forum on the website, there was near zero activity, > and it was... er.. it was so very empty , almost scary. I think VNC is probably a bit slower than Timbuktu, since it is platform-agnostic, but I believe that "free" more than makes up for it. The forums are fairly busy, not sure what you're referring to. Generally you can get an answer on them within a few weeks. But keep in mind that Chicken is open-source software, so you're at the mercy of someone just happening to drop by and knowing the answer to something you post. This particular mailing list (cotvnc-releases) is basically unused, and is only for release announcements. Yours is the first message posted on it in nearly three years. > 1. is chicken alive, kickin' and under further development? Yes. SourceForge's statistics thang puts Chicken in the 98th percentile of open-source projects last week. > 2. where else do you chicken people meet? > (even these mailinglists seem to have very few members) Most discussion happens on the developer mailing list, but it's all developer discussion, not end-user stuff. For general VNC questions, you could ask on RealVNC's mailing list. It's a general list, so I think if you felt the urge, you could post Chicken questions there, too. > 3. what should i know, when changing from timbuktu to chicken? Beats me, I've never used Timbuktu. :) > 4. tiger? > on a quick usenet search i saw somebody say he had it working on > tiger. > can you people confirm this? Works for me. > 5. anybody have a suggestion, even another remote app, i should try? As the Chicken project manager, my advice is probably biased. :) Jason |
