Although I enter a host IP address and port I always receive the
dialog "Could not connect to server localhost 5900". The IP
address entered is not the localhost but an IP address on my local
network (192.168.1.2). The same IP adress and port works with
VNCThing and VNCViewer so I know that the VNC Server is
operating at that address.

I'm seeing the exact same problem here

The issue is that if you don't have a server selected in the list on the left,
Chicken ignores your entry and uses the default, which is localhost:5900.

Workaround this by pressing the + button to add a server, and then enter
    the connection information.

Note that if you're also affected by nasty Bug #1011542, you'll still have
    problems.

This applies only to Chicken 2.0b1. If this is overwhelming, you may
wish to downgrade back to 1.3.6 until we work out these kinks-of-
    ickiness.

    Fixed for 2.0b2 release. Closing.
