Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Here is the default map view so far view at 1024 *768. (scan levels are turned of eg with full information) . Objects of note Message box - The message box appears at the bottom and is transparent except for the text . This can be hidden allong with the Empire view bar on the left. Grid Lines - Can be turned of , but are usefull . Control Bar on the left is used for Navigation and changing the map mode . An empire and race has been loaded ( though I have not done the Empire bar yet as I will do this after units) . The system view shows planets ( red for too hot , green for good , blue for too call). This only has one Panel . When viewing ships a 2 and 3rd panel will show which are used for the target and orders. I am now moving onto displaying units and moving units. Any comments ? Ben |

How are things going ? I will have some pre alpha screen shots in about 2 weeks , might make a good development record. Wouldn't advertise such early and ugly pictures though. The thing is... When I get the frames figured out, all those big images will be gone. I just use some images as fillers for now but they will be gone as soon as I get the news script done. Sean |

re mySQL Im not sure about this in sourceforge . All I have in the instructions are " Setup your group's web site. I'll assume that you have some sort of web page or site built already that you wish to put up on SourceForge to give your group a public face. Login to SourceForge using SSH, for example ; ssh -l loginname yourproject.sourceforge.net you will now be in your home directory. All group files are stored in a directory structure for each project. The group directory structure is split out by the first, then first and second, letters of the project name. From here all group files are stored in /home/groups/y/yo/yourproject. Change to this directory. All your web pages are stored in the htdocs directory. Going in here will contain index.php, which is a blank page that says you haven't uploaded a web page yet. Logout, and copy the files for your web page using scp, a program which comes with ssh. For example: scp localfile log...@yo...:/home/groups/y/yo/yourproject/htdocs/ I suggest you gzip up your site, send it in one go using scp, then login with ssh and gunzip it. So what should be on the web page ? Perhaps you'd like the following, as well as your project's information ; A link to the projects group page on SourceForge. Mailing list links (we'll create them in a second) A SourceForge icon and web counter - see the site documentation for this. A link to the CVS web interface at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/yourproject Some info about using CVS specific to your project. Setup mailing lists for your project. If your project isn't that active yet (or only has one lonely developer) your mailing lists will be very quiet, however I still suggest you look to the future and setup three standard lists for your project: a devel list for developers, a users list for users, and an announce list for new version announcements. Do this via your group page using the mailing list admin link. Its quite simple so you shouldn't have any problems... " But if I think about it some of the DB using progs must have a MySQL server. If it exists pointr me to the page and I will set it up. As of right now, I am planning to have the screenshot link on the overview page. I included a graphic displaying the hierarchy I think will fit best for the site. Oh yeah, before I forget, I will need the mySQL info (like password, server, username, etc.). |

I have noticed the initial page for the web site is up. Could I get a button on there for graphics or screenshots? I don't need anyone to build the graphics page I can do it. My site is rather full and I would rather place any graphics done for the project to be displayed here on sourceforge. If it is all right I can even create the button if need for now. dana. |

Included in this e-mail is an image of the layout as of now. If you have suggestions on anything regarding the layout, i.e. navigation links, please sent them my way. Sean |

Thanks, but I believe I have everything I need right now. I am using Photoshop 6 and Bryce 5 to make the graphics and they will hopefully be done by the end of today (Saturday, Feb 1, 03). I will put set it up on my personal server so you guys can see the progress but I am not sure what the URL will be since my IP address changes. I'll get you know about 7:00 Central Standard Time. Hi Sean, If I have the time and you would like some misc. things that you can not find out there, I could could maybe make some stuff for the web page. One place you can go that has a free, think $25 for full version, software for making quick star backgrounds is: http://www.diardsoftware.com/. dana. Appreciate your message , I have been sick as well. Other things we need are Help wanted Game Rules and Information Programming Documentation . Link to source forge page. Regarding Spaceships , there will be lots of different ships and alien races in the game but the art work is further down the track. At present our artistic endeavours are concentrated on the UI. When this is sorted we will move onto some pictures at present just grab some freebies we can improve later. Ben > -----Original Message----- > From: Sdv...@ao... I would like to welcome you all to the Cosmos2 project , and lets hope that Brads hotmail ID doesn't give us a hex ( utt...@ho...). I really need to focus on coding and finding more coders at this point so I hope that Brad and Sean can kick of the Web site activity. I have added Dana who is working on UI and art as there may be some synergies ( NO.......I dont want ot speak like that) . Ben Kloosterman ben...@it... PS: Im in Shanghai so if you want to get me in a hurry it will have to be at some ungodly hour , but I may be tapping away. |
