Currently you have patches for this but it would be
better if ./configure was available directly upon
un-tarring the source. In particualr it'd be nice
to have "make install" capability.
I submitted a patch to do this in May 2005 (via this project). I don't think it necessary (or even useful) for the general build (and likely confusing to most people who stop by - especially those using MS Windows) but may be a step on the way to Debian acceptance. So suggest it's not included in the mainline until progress is made on the Debian front.
