that's strange they are really huge , I remember that both rpm and deb
should have almost exactly the same files except a one or two minor files for
distribution specific 
my first guess would be that debian is better than redhat :)
but you gonna reject it so I'll look further

do you have some specific compilation flags?
what make the libs fatter is generally the debugging flags
do you define CXXFLAGS in you environment variables?
(both deb and rpm use the same flags otherwise, they are built using 
configure)
I rebuild corelinux rpms on my computer to see if they have the same size as 
yours.
