I should also add that in the realm of lightweight OSes, you should also research TinyOS. I'm not so familiar with this OS, but its popular in many academic circles. One of the main reasons I chose Contiki over TinyOS is that TinyOS uses a variation of the C-language called NesC. This decreases its appeal for mainstream and commercial applications since there is a learning curve associated with the language. However it's also designed for memory and power constrained systems and is widely used in wireless sensor networks.
