I was just wondering how 4.0 was coming?  I keep my fingers crossed daily hoping for an update.

I award you a gold star in loyalty. Thanks for the post!

4.0 was supposed to be a rewrite based on Java 5 and with JDIC (Java Desktop Integration Components). However, once Java 6 was released most of the features I was utilizing within JDIC became mainstream. So right now I'm porting everything to Java 6.

It's going much slower than hoped mainly due to personal & job-related reasons (work is taking about 10 hours a day right now), but progress is still being made. The current plan is to create a branch on the current 3.1 release and make enough bugfixes to roll out 3.1.2. After that, the conversion to Java 6 can start beta.

Of course, if you yourself or any friends-and-relations are Java programmers (or programmers in the making) and interested in contributing, I'm happy to take any volunteers.

Thanks to SwingLabs ( http://swinglabs.org/ ) development has now been accelerated by several weeks. I was working on my own TableTree implementation... but now that Sun has their own I can just use that.

Java 6's SystemTray utility also has trimmed off some time, which is a significant help.

A plugin-less version will be released as alpha first, followed by the plugin architecture. This is a complete re-write, so it may take a bit. However I should be able to cut down the codebase by 1/3rd as a result.

The new user interface is starting to take shape now. It's a complete rewrite - 100% of the old code has been scrapped. Gone are separate dialog boxes popping up when editing records - now you edit fields like you would a collapsable spreadsheet. Much more straight-forward.

Since the rewrite is taking such a long time, I'm going to start launching bits and pieces more frequently for people to take a look at. I've made the whole project Java WebStart ready... so soon you'll be able to use Java WebStart to download the latest alpha and see what's going on.

Bear in mind the releases will be far from stable, and most of what you'll see posted are prototypes instead of full applications. You may notice only limited things work, but that's usually because I'm trying to flesh out a new concept. Things like table cell editing might seem straight-forward, but I'm trying to modularize & abstract things as much as humanly possible.

Surprisingly enough SourceForge's download service plays nice with JNLP, and the testing I've done so far has worked surprisingly well. I just need to create the launch page on the site along with the embed tags & detection JavaScript then I'll prep it for launch.

The Java WebStart demo is ready - for now you can take a look at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/consultcomm/ConsultComm.jnlp . Bear in mind this is currently the UI prototype, so everything is still far from final.
