Thanks for this.  If there is one critical thing, it's the lack of  
downscalability.  Needing a "dedicated big rig" with pretty hefty  
system requirements (i.e. mod_perl and and memcached) is the largest  
factor that stops me from working on this code base at the moment.

Looking forward to the new code.  Would it be possible for distribute  
a small sample mysql database for hacking/testing purposes with the  
new code please?
