I'm just going through the process of installing Connotea-code onto with a fresh hand compiled Apache2/mod_perl on an iBook running os x 10.4 and note that a prereq Time::HR is not available on BSD or win32 style systems. I think (I'm not sure) that Time::HiRes would be an appropriate cross- platform replacement for this (certainly more widely used in the perl community anyway). Would this be correct? Anyway looks like a pretty interesting project. I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into it. -- Kieren Diment Centre for Leadership and Knoweldge Management School of Management, Marketing University of Wollongong Tel: +61 2 4221 3072 Mobile: 0403 929 895 Email: kd...@uo... |

Hi S=E9bastien, We actually have a working NASA-ADS citation source module in the lab as=20 of yesterday, based largely on your prior advice, specifically in=20 building a hyperlink to fetch BibTeX. Their BibTeX output is actually=20 pretty good except for just needing to expand the journal name from a=20 TeX abbreviation. We will need to test our module so look for it early=20 next week. We probably will; I'll talk to Ben (L) about using logged in status as part of the throttling, but he's apparently out today. It's all a bit of a game. You mention hackers and bots in one phrase but they are separate. Hackers can always apply for and receive whatever authorization they need. (I mean, put it this way, I don't know *you're* not a nefarious mortgage offer poster. ;-) Just kidding...) But what we're trying to stem the tide of is bots that are running all over the web, or even just social bookmarking sites, whose authors have not necessarily done research on Connotea in particular. A few simple obstacles such as these do help a lot with that crowd. Martin |

Hi, NASA-ADS indeed export in a number of formats. The full list is here: http://doc.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs_doc/help_pages/results.html#Formatting_Op= tions RIS (RefMan ?) is supported: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-bib_query?bibcode=3D1965ApJ...142..41= 9P&data_type=3DREFMAN Since Connotea imports RIS files, I guess that this format could be used to implement the NASA-ADS plugin. Yet the output requires a bit a processing in order to be understood by Connotea :-( NASA-ADS does not seem to conform to RIS format specifications that I found here: http://www.refman.com/support/risformat_sample_04.asp The first field of NASA-ADS is .TY Journal, while it should be .TY JOUR. The import works fine when I make the subsitution in the file. Same applies to .TY Conference, that should be .TY CONF. An other thing I 've noticed is that the multiple keywords are all in the same field, i.e. .KW keyword1 / keyword2, ... while it should be .KW keyword1 .KW keyword2 etc... I've emailed NASA-ADS folks about this. S=E9bastien |

Hi all, Got another error of the same type as before: Character reference "" is an invalid XML character. Suppose I'll have to implement some error handling on this end. Aside from that, I can't seem to go more than a few requests without hitting a 503. As far as I can tell I should not be hitting the throttling rules, but perhaps I am?? Out of curiosity, is anyone else making frequent hits to the web api? I'm getting a little concerned that I won't be able to produce the little application I had hoped for do to the current instability of the server. If some one else is making frequent calls without issue, then I must be screwing something up - otherwise.. I don't know - perhaps I should wait until an official release comes out? I totally understand that this is still a work in progress - its just so cool that I'm impatient to start playing with it (and this app would fit into a paper I'm working on quite nicely). thanks -Ben(G) |

Hi Martin, I've only been actively working on this for the past few days so I guess I picked a bad time. I'm still getting the same XML parsing error. I'm getting the 503s from Java hits on the web API (making it tempting though sinful to scrape the Connotea pages directly).. I'm guessing you are working with it again at the moment because nothing is going through right now. The throttling rules seem fair to me, but it would be helpful if you could send a response that would indicate the reason for the failure (server restarting, throttling, karma..). THis would make it easier for diagnosis on this end. I don't know if you folks have the money, but it would be wonderful if there was a development server meant for web api access that was separate from the public one running the site. It might make it possible for to relax the rules a bit to allow the external developers more freedom. Just a thought. -Ben (G) On Aug 9, 2006, at 5:06 PM, Martin Flack wrote: > It's really bizarre, the database literally contains that data. > It's not an encoding issue (or perhaps you could say it's a lack of > escaping). > > It's true that XML can't display certain characters like 1 and 2 as > pure legal fiction of the specification, and it does get annoying > sometimes when someone else introduces those characters because it > always seems like such a completely irrelevant note in the spec.... > > For now I've just stripped them out because I can't believe the > author meant to have them in there. > > If you're getting 503's in the last couple hours it may be because > I'm restarting the production service unusually often. Hi All, We're about to begin work on the oft-requested feature to allow you to manually enter or edit bibliographic information for bookmarks. Instead of just unleashing an arbitrary version on you, I wanted to get some feedback on exactly how you'd like the feature to work. I'm talking in terms of buttons, clicks, and layouts here - exactly how it would suit you best, since it's these kind of details that you all know far better than me. I've described the proposed functions here: http://www.connotea.org/wiki/ProposedBibInfoEdit Please have a look, and edit the page if you think there's anything wrong, or something missing from the way this should work. It's actually a pretty basic feature, but it could potentially add extra time to the bookmarking process, so I want to make sure it's as easy to use as possible. It's really bizarre, the database literally contains that data. It's not an encoding issue (or perhaps you could say it's a lack of escaping). It's true that XML can't display certain characters like 1 and 2 as pure legal fiction of the specification, and it does get annoying sometimes when someone else introduces those characters because it always seems like such a completely irrelevant note in the spec.... For now I've just stripped them out because I can't believe the author meant to have them in there. If you're getting 503's in the last couple hours it may be because I'm restarting the production service unusually often. If you're talking about a longer time span, it could be because of our bot throttling. You should never be getting 503's in your browser. If you do please tell us the browser type and version. If you are using an API such as Java you may be running afoul of our freshly minted bot throttling rules: http://www.connotea.org/wiki/Throttling Please let us know if you think our rules are too harsh. OK, I'm making a lot of changes at the moment - give me a few days and I will send out a link to a publicly accessible repository. While I have your attention, perhaps I can trouble the list with a design pattern question. I would like to host my own website that allows people to explore Connotea (as well as other sites) using a tag cloud style interface. To make use of the web api, I need to send a user name and a password. Is there any way that I can send requests from my website that are authenticated without the need for me to process a user's information? At the moment, I can either use my own information (hopefully you won't shut down my account..) or request the info from the user - which is not ideal for privacy purposes. If I could somehow get the users info from their browser in an encrypted format, then, assuming they are logged in, perhaps I could use their info for the authentication without ever actually "seeing" it?? Simpler just to use my account and request that its not blocked if it starts to generate heavy load I guess. ? -Ben (G) On Aug 9, 2006, at 8:46 AM, Lund, Ben wrote: > Hi Ben (G), > > I would obviously love to see what you've put together. > > Ta, > B (L) > > > On 9/8/06 16:38, "Benjamin Good" <go...@in...> wrote: > >> Thanks Martin, >> >> Happy to know I wasn't misunderstanding (for once). Thanks Martin, Happy to know I wasn't misunderstanding (for once). In case anyone else is interested, I am working on some tag cloud generating software that will hopefully meet Ross Gayler's requests (http:// www.connotea.org/wiki/RequestUITagCloudAnywhere ) - which have probably been up for a while though I hadn't noticed them till now. If I was a better programmer and/or had more time to devote I would put it together into a proper library for sharing (for Java people).. but for now, if anyone wants to see what I have hacked together just let me know. If someone out there does meet the two criteria above, I would be happy to extend the library that they implement with whatever bits of my code that might be useful to the community. cheers -ben On Aug 9, 2006, at 8:26 AM, Martin Flack wrote: > Hi Ben, > > We are aware of this and it's moving steadily up our to-do list. > It's just a bug based on the SQL, and we're actually rewriting the > way that works. > > q does a full text index search on most of the fields in the database. > > We don't have much in the way of official sorting options at the > moment. Hi Robert, I'm actually using an RDF processing library called Jena (http:// jena.sourceforge.net/ ) to work with the results data. Its probably much slower than almost anything else.. but it is very flexible and I have to use it for other work so I'll probably stick with it. I was hoping to add sorting conditions directly to my request so that I could limit the amount of results based on my own criteria. For example - give me the top 100 tags according to frequency of use or recency or number of users etc. thanks though! -Ben On Aug 9, 2006, at 8:17 AM, Robert Muetzelfeldt wrote: > Hi Ben, > > I don't know the answer to your basic question, nor do I work with > Java! Hi Ben, We are aware of this and it's moving steadily up our to-do list. It's just a bug based on the SQL, and we're actually rewriting the way that works. q does a full text index search on most of the fields in the database. We don't have much in the way of official sorting options at the moment. Usually it's by timestamp descending, but for q it actually creates a score based on which field the data appeared in. We should have a fix for this soon. Cheers, Martin Benjamin Good wrote: > Hi, > > I would like to GET tags that are related to a search term. Hi, I would like to GET tags that are related to a search term. Trying the following results in an error (perhaps the developers have seen the auto-bug reports already). http://www.connotea.org/tags/?q=ontology&num=10 If I constrain the query to a particular user like: http://www.connotea.org/tags/user/bgood/?q=ontology&num=10 then things are peachy. What am I doing wrong? What exactly does the ?q=X search actually do ? Is there any way to return the results sorted in a particular way? How are the results currently sorted (if at all) ? Anyone else working with Java? thanks! -Ben |

Hi Robert, Thanks for following up. > this message reminds me of the arxiv plugin. is this already > implemented? It's written, but not released yet. We need to test it against a long list of URLs before releasing it, but unfortunately our testing is running foul of arXiv's fighting-back-against-the-robots policy. I'm trying to sort this out, but apologies for the delay. Hi Sebastien, Thanks for this. I don't suppose you have Perl BibTeX parsing skills, and are willing to help out, do you? We've experimented with the CPAN Text::BibTeX module ( http://search.cpan.org/~ambs/Text-BibTeX-0.36/BibTeX.pm), but it has proved to have problems coping with the variety of BibTeX files that are out there in the wild. We'll test the NASA-ADS BibTeX, and if it seems to parse well, we should be able to create a plug-in fairly quickly. I have just submitted a request on the wiki for a plugin to import citations in Connotea from NASA-ADS abstract service.
