i was able to successfully download, but it did not start when I clicked the startup shortcut link.

  The current version only supports Java 1.6 or later. You may download the latest JRE or JDK from the Sun website or by going to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281. Install the JRE/JDK then follow the instruction from http://comparezilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/Installation+and+Configuration to setup CompareZilla.
