okay. so.
Compactor will change to a mixture of what it was and a crafting table. I'll email you the new GUI. (actually, I attached it here too!) basically, it has 2 3x3 grids. one is input, one is output. when you put something compressable (cobble, nrack, ingots, ingot blocks, saplings, seeds, bricks, carbon, glass slag etc.) into the left grid, it is compressed how the compactor works now and moved to the right (output) side, and "remainder" items are left in the left side.
next, as we discussed previously, there will be many compactor-only recipes. to craft these, you will need to place the recipe in the correct shape into the 3x3 input grid. now, there's two options, and I'll leave it up to you. One: as soon as the recipe is completed, the items are crafted and show up in the output grid OR Two: when the recipe is completed, the product becomes visible in the output grid and is then able to be clicked on to craft and pick it up (like how a normal crafting table works)
I think that's about it? both grids will allow you to place items directly into them, only items placed in the left one (which is where shift-click will place things) will have anything done with them though. if the right grid is full of items, compaction will cease. if there is anything in the center right slot (perhaps any right slot?) crafting will not be enabled.

I think not metamorphic/blaze furnaces, they don't feel... compacty.
I'd say yes shielding, not core.
agreed. I edited the comments.
