0.1 Alpha Release and demo

I am very pleased to announce that the Community Mobile Channels Version 0.1 Alpha source code and demo is now available (on this site!). To visit the demo go to http://www.mainstreamingict.org/cmc

There are a few example M-sites (micro websites) loaded up onto the demo and you are free to register if you would like to upload content and publish a M-site of your own - a (very quick) guide to registering and publishing is given below:-

1. Register with your cellphone number (International format e.g uk starts with 44), choose a user name and password.

2. You will get a confirmation link sent to your cellphone - click this and you are signed up.

3. Now go and log in.

4. After login you can go to ‘your zone’ and upload pictures, video, audio (please keep the files sizes smallish - video and audio are capped at 1.5mb - it is suppose to be small clips of your phone content - It is also a good idea to keep the resoltion of your pics 800 by 600 or similar).

5. In ‘your zone’ you can create a new M-site or manage existing M-sites. Create a new one and give it a name and the channel it should go in.

6. In your new M-site press add item and choose whether you want to write something or add pictures or other files - if it is getting too long add a page break. Edit text, remove items or change the order if you need to.

7. When you are happy - publish your site

8. Find your site either on the home page, in the channel you put it in or through a search. Send your friends a SMS link to your new M-site or simply send then an sms or email to the demo site.

9. Remember to bookmark the homepage and come back often.

10. Don’t go too crazy because we will be refreshing the demo ocasionally.

The source code and installation package/details are available over at sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/communitymobile/

All feedback very welcome and please remember that it is an alpha and I hope to squash the bugs very quickly.

Some of the future project plans are given on the demo M-site - Project Plans by admin.

This project will be submitted to both the NetSquared N2Y4 Mobile Challenge & the UC Berkeley Human Rights Center Mobile Challenge. It would be great if people could support this project by voting for it and giving feedback.

If you would like any further details or want to help, please contact rob at ngobeni dot net.
