Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

Things just started working. Though I don't know why. I did find one 
problem with my config (the Name option in the NIC config in the xml was 
incorrect) but that would not explain why my host OS network went totally 
AWOL when bridging was set up, and why it suddenly fixed itself on my 
third or fourth attempt. Heh.

Either way, things are all working now.
