woohoo!! it worked! we had ethernet problems which I solved by using 
bridged mode and winpcap then fixing speech recognition errors in the 
configuration file.

now it's mostly working right.  upgraded gentoo and with over 120 
etc-update files, I just -5ed all the updates and have been cleaning 
them up slowly.  Unfortunately, something is wrong with the modules and 
since I have no back scroll (or cut and paste) with the console window 
(fltk) I can't figure out exactly what's happening since it isn't logged.
