how are you starting vnc? if you start by the command line vncserver you need a ~/.vnc/xstartup script to run a window manager the default one that is installed the firs= t time you run vncserver uses twm so if twm is not installed then you will get a grey screen. if you are using Xvnc with inetd (or xinetd) you need to configure your display manager to listen for xdmcp requests.( at least from 127.0.0.1) I can help further with this If you tell me what display manager you are using.
