Thank you Paolo. It was the following line in /etc/inittab that was
being respawned continuously:
C0::respawn:/usr/bin/X11/startwindowsterminalsession
This in turn was calling /etc/sbin/launcher.pl.
Commented it and hope that the problem is solved. This X stuff is not
so simple to get rid of completely.
